The Evolving Speaking Landscape

Using your speaker topics to showcase your unique stories, knowledge and experiences makes you stand out above the rest. The speaking industry has undergone a massive transformation in the past decade, becoming increasingly competitive. Like many sectors, it’s only getting tougher to make your mark. In this environment, finding ways to differentiate yourself isn’t just important, it’s essential.

The AI Challenge and Personal Authenticity

In today’s world, where AI is leading to a homogenisation of content, there’s never been a more crucial time to showcase what makes you unique. Your personal experiences, your individual journey, and your distinctive perspective are your greatest assets as a speaker.

A Case Study in Uniqueness

Let me share a yarn about some keynotes I delivered in South Australia. The theme was “Crossroads”, a topic that might sound familiar to many. However, what made it special was my approach: sharing seven pivotal crossroads from my own life journey, complete with the lessons learned and how each milestone led to the next chapter of my story. I developed a framework around identifying and capitalising on these life changing moments, and crikey, did it resonate with the audience!

Your Speaker Topics – the 80% Rule

Here’s the thing: while anyone could present on crossroads, what sets you apart is your unique take, your personal narrative, and your teaching methodology. I live by what I call the 80% rule, ensuring that at least 80% of my content, whether it’s a workshop, keynote, or retreat, comes from my personal experiences, revelations, and insights.

Avoiding the Beige Trap

If you can’t achieve this level of originality in your presentations, you risk becoming just another voice in an already crowded space. In the speaking world, being beige is your worst enemy. You need to stand out, not blend in.

Planning for Success

As you map out your speaking calendar for the upcoming year, take a good hard look at your topics. Ask yourself: “Can I genuinely showcase my authentic self through these presentations? Can I weave in my own stories, experiences, and frameworks?”

Final Thoughts on Speaker Topics

The secret sauce to becoming a world class speaker isn’t just about mastering delivery or choosing trendy topics, it’s about bringing your whole, authentic self to the stage. And also about crafting your speaker topics to incorporate your unique experiences and insights. They will set you apart in this competitive landscape.

So there you have it, folks. Remember, in a world where everyone’s trying to be someone else, your greatest asset is being uniquely you.
